Understanding Bookkeeping Cleanup

Cleanup addresses records that are incomplete, inconsistent, or need correction. Catch-up fills in unfinished periods. A business may need one or both before a dependable monthly routine can begin.

This guide helps you recognize the starting point and prepare for a conversation about your QuickBooks Online books.

Before You Begin

Work From Records, Not Guesswork

Look for the signs

Unreconciled accounts, missing months, duplicate entries, and unfamiliar balances can indicate that your records need a closer review. A bank feed alone does not tell the whole story of a completed set of books.

Gather what you have

Available bank and credit card statements, prior reports, receipts, and information about loans or other accounts help establish what happened. Missing records can affect both the scope and timing.

Review before changing entries

Changes to older records can affect later balances and reports. If tax returns have already been filed for those periods, tell your bookkeeper and tax professional before corrections are made.

Plan the path forward

At Bennett, cleanup is individually scoped and quoted separately from monthly service. You receive a clear, fixed project quote before work begins, based on the scope and condition of your books. Once records are current, monthly bookkeeping can help prevent the backlog from returning. We discuss the work before beginning.
